The Magnificent Mayans
About the Mayan Civilisation
For over 3,000 years, the Mayan people lived in an area known as Mesoamerica - now Central Amercia. The Mayans, indigenous to Mexico and Central Amerca developed a rich culture, which survived until 1697 CE.
The Mayans lived in, and adapted to, a challenging environment, with different geographic regions including rainforest and coastal plains. They learnt to manage water supply and crops, developed language and counting systems and were knowledgeable about the stars. Of course, they are known for human sacrifice, as they believed the Gods required such offerings.
Reasons for the demise of the Mayan civilisation are debated by historians, although the arrivial of the Spanish in the 1520s is likely to have been a strong contributing factor. Despite the downfall, the remains of some Mayan sites still exist and are renowned around the world for their historical significance and architectural value. Some of these sites include Chichen Itza and the main plaza of Itzal.

Our Approach
Our studies will put the Mayan period into an historical timeline. We will be looking at life for the Mayan people and necessary adaptations for the different Mayan city states to survive. This will include looking at leadership of the regions and shfting powers over time.
Putting the Mayans into historical context, we will draw comparisons to the Anglo Saxon rule in Britain at that time, comparing and contrasting the two societies.
Our studies will include looking at artefacts, video footage, photography and artwork, as well as exploring and debating kley historical themes.
