School Learning Council
What does a Learning council do?
A Learning Council is a group of pupils who act as representatives of their classmates in discussing school issues with the Headteacher and is used as a group to speak with visitors/Governors. We call it a Learning Council at High Hurstwood CE Primary School rather than a School Council as our meetings link specifically to the learning which is being covered at school. Students are elected to represent the views of all pupils and also to improve their school. This is version of pupil voice and is key way that we encourage pupils to be engaged in the learning across the school.
They help to make decisions about how the school is run and take on projects that support the children’s learning and development, such as discussions on how you learn best, starting iniatives off with each class, representing the school at outside events or ensuring the school is environmentally friendly.
The Learning Council have achieved the following so far:
- relaunched new school prayer, written by pupils and reflects our school - please click here to see the new prayer in our prayer and reflections page.
- improvements to our extra curricular club offer after discussions and inputs from the pupils.
- pupils' views on how to make the most of our outdoor spaces and how as a chool we can embrace outdoor learning.
- discussions on how we can improve the Library and Nurture room spaces.
We are currently working on an exciting project about how we can create a Gardening area in the school. This is linked to the Friends of High Hurstwood's Tesco Grant Scheme. The children will be involved in designing and choosing resources for this new area. We also hope to organise a grand opening of the new site and as a Learning Council think about how we continue to use this space in the future, linked to the learning of pupils accross the school.
