Our Physical Education Curriculum
The PE and Sport curriculum at High Hurstwood CE Primary School develops the enjoyment of physical activity and strives to improve the importance of health and wellbeing. Our intention is to give children the opportunities to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding and apply these in competitive situations, with the vision this provides them with lifelong learning skills. Children are helped to acquire the skills needed to participate with confidence and enjoyment in a range of individual and team activities at school, and to appreciate the place of regular exercise as a way of keeping fit.
Our PE curriculum covers the knowledge and skills outlined in the National Curriculum and ensures all children are given opportunities to be challenged to progress their learning further. All children take part in two hours of high-quality PE and sporting activities each week provided by classteachers and our Headteacher.
We follow the Get Set 4 P.E scheme, please click on the logo below to go their website for an overview of the scheme.
We also have good links with community clubs and raise standards of P.E by offering a range of sporting opportunities through the below levels of competition:
-
Intra-school (Level 1) – sporting competition for all students in school through intra-school competition e.g. house competitions and sports day.
-
Inter-school and local inter-school competitions (Level 2) – the wide range of sporting events we offer within the Beacon cluster of primary schools and the subsequent rounds afterwards for the North Wealden Schools Sports Partnership Area Finals.
-
School Games Festivals/County Finals (Level 3) – Active Sussex will stage multi-sport School Games Festivals or a Regional Final as a culmination of year-round school sport competition e.g. School Games, Sussex Finals for specific events.
These events are based around 6 key values of the School Games and we work closely with our North Wealden School Games Organiser at Beacon Academy, Tracy Lewis. We encourage our children to follow these values, not only in sport, but in everything they do:
Physical Education is enriched through a wide range of well-attended after-school clubs. Please click here to see our extra curricular club offer. We also currently hold the Gold Schools Games Kitemark Award for P.E & Sport for 2022-23 academic year, this self-assessment awards includes our curriculum, extra-curricular clubs, competitions and volunteering opportunities.
All pupils in Year 6 take part in a week’s residential visit at Surrey Outdoor Learning Centre, in High Ashurst, Surrey. A range of outdoor and adventurous pursuits are offered including climbing, challenge course, orienteering, low ropes, crate stacking, high ropes and archery.
We also run a succesful Play Leaders scheme with our Year 5 pupils running the Playground Leaders scheme every lunchtime. They run activities from pupils from Year R - 4 at lunchtimes. This is essential for pupils to gain the opportunity to volunteer and organise activities for younger pupils. This also improves the offer we have in place at playtimes for our pupils to be active and meet the recomended rate of 30 active minutes in school outlined by the Chief Medical Officer, they also reccomend 30 active minutes at home.
