Forest School
At High Hurstwood, we believe that learning extends far beyond the classroom. Outdoor learning provides children with valuable opportunities to develop confidence, resilience, independence and a deeper understanding of the natural world.
As we explore options for a new Forest School provider and funding to support a wider programme, we remain committed to ensuring that outdoor learning continues to play an important role in our curriculum. All teachers are encouraged to make full use of our extensive outdoor environment and are continuing to develop opportunities for children to learn outside the classroom across a range of subjects.
We are fortunate to have Mrs Wood, our trained Forest School practitioner and Panda Class teacher, who delivers regular Forest School experiences for the children in Panda Class. These sessions provide opportunities for children to explore, investigate, problem-solve and develop practical skills through hands-on experiences in nature. We will continue to review and expand these opportunities throughout the year as part of our ongoing commitment to outdoor learning.
Our outdoor spaces include a mud kitchen, bug hotel, willow classroom, pond area, fire pit and den-building spaces, all of which provide exciting and engaging learning opportunities throughout the seasons.
Through outdoor learning, children develop an appreciation of the natural environment while strengthening important life skills such as teamwork, communication, creativity and perseverance. These experiences also create meaningful links across the curriculum, including Science, Geography, English, Mathematics, Art and PSHE.
By immersing children in nature and encouraging exploration, we aim to foster a lifelong respect for the environment and help children understand their role in caring for the world around them.
